The condition of a rural firefighter who suffered burns while fighting a large grassfire at Maidenwell last Thursday has improved.
Queensland Fire Department Commissioner Steve Smith said on Sunday that while the firefighter was still in a serious condition in hospital, their condition had improved to stable.
“This morning, RFSQ Acting Chief Officer Ben Millington and I again visited family members at the hospital and passed on the well wishes of all QFD and RFSQ members,” Commissioner Smith said.
“We will continue to be with them in the days, weeks and months ahead as they recover.
“Support is also continuing for the firefighter’s fellow, and neighbouring, brigade members, as well as RFSQ Area Office staff.
“The family has asked we pass on their thanks for the overwhelming support and care they are receiving from QFD, RFSQ and the wider community.
“They appreciate their privacy being respected at this very difficult time and further updates will be provided in line with their wishes.”
A woman aged in her 60s was airlifted by the rescue helicopter to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with multiple burns on Thursday afternoon.
A rural fire brigade truck was destroyed in the incident.
