The Eiffel Tower looms over the temporary stadium in Paris where the Olympic beach volleyball competition is being contested

August 2, 2024

Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar have secured a spot in the next round of the beach volleyball competition at the Paris Olympics after a decisive victory over Canada in the early hours of Friday morning.

The Aussie duo, who were sitting at third spot on the Pool B ladder, defeated Canadians Heather Barnsley and Sophie Bukovec 2-0 (21-10, 21-16).

However, only the top two teams in each pool – and the two best-ranked third-placed teams – go through to the next stage of the competition.

Other third-ranked teams go to the “lucky loser” elimination round.

When the USA duo of Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth defeated China’s Chen Xue and Xinyi Xia 2-1 in the rain a few hours later, the Aussies overtook China on the ladder, moving into second spot and thus ensuring their place in the “Round of 16”.

The schedule for these next games will be decided once all the other Pool competitions have been completed.
