The former DTMR office in Kingaroy’s Artie Kerr Building in Kingaroy Street was a very well-known building, but has sat vacant since 2023 when the department moved to more modern premises in Alford Street

South Burnett Regional Council will negotiate with the State Government to buy the Artie Kerr Centre building in Kingaroy.

The block – adjacent to the Kingaroy Courthouse – formerly housed the Department Of Transport’s Kingaroy office (now located in Alford Street) and sits on a prime CBD site.

Over the years, parts of the building have been used by Kingaroy Police, South Burnett CTC and as a meeting space by many community groups.

At Wednesday’s monthly meeting, Councillors voted to delegate CEO Mark Pitt to enter into negotiations with the State Government, which owns the site, on Council’s behalf.

Cr Jane Erkens said she was opposed to the motion because it seemed Council was rushing into the decision without giving it adequate consideration, and she could see no benefit in the purchase.

She said she would prefer if the matter were laid on the table for more detailed deliberations.

However, the motion to proceed with negotiations was passed 6-1.
