The Nanango Panthers soccer club hosted a friendly game at Alan Downie Sports Fields in Nanango last Sunday afternoon to honour the man after whom the grounds have been named.
The social game, between the Panthers women’s team and the club’s Cadets squad, was played in good spirits with teams competing for the Alan Downie Memorial Shield.
Alan Downie joined the Nanango Sporting Association – the not-for-profit group which runs the sporting area in Burnett Street – in 1983 and was a much-valued member right up to his death.
Over the years, he served as the NSA’s president, vice-president and groundsman.
Alan was also a keen soccer player and supporter, coaching both junior and senior Panthers’ men’s and women’s teams.
The sports field is the home of the Nanango Scorpions cricket club, the Panthers soccer club and the Nanango Kennel Club.
This Sunday, the Nanango Sporting Association will be hosting another major event at the grounds.
The annual Power Up Show And Shine And Swap Meet will be held from 9:30am to 1:00pm.
It will feature a feast of vehicles plus market stalls, a canteen, coffee van and a magic show for kids at 11:00am.
