South Burnett Regional Council’s push for a moratorium on renewable energy projects was debated at the Australian Local Government Association conference in Canberra on Thursday.
However, Mayor Kathy Duff amended the motion, changing the call for “a moratorium” on renewables projects to a “review”, before it was put to a vote.
“This National General Assembly calls on the Australian Government to call for a moratorium on renewable energy and regulate …” was changed to
“This National General Assembly calls on the Australian Government to review renewable energy projects and regulate …”
Randwick City Council spoke against the motion, saying almost 40 per cent of electricity was already coming from renewable energy sources, and time was running out to reach targets.
The Randwick councillor said there was a need to push forward to 100 per cent renewable power.
A representative from Snowy Valleys Council backed the South Burnett’s push, saying people in metropolitan Sydney did not understand what was happening.
The motion was eventually carried by 109 votes to 80.
Speaking later, Mayor Kathy Duff said it was obvious there was strong support for the motion in the room.
