The May meeting of the South Burnett Parkinson’s Support Group was held at Graham House in Murgon on May 27.

Fourteen people were in attendance.

The meeting congratulated Col and Alison Otto on their 53rd wedding anniversary, an impressive milestone.

Brochures about the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) self-advocacy toolkit were distributed. OPAN provides a free service for aged care matters and have resources which can be mailed out.

Also discussed was “The Wonder Sheet“, a sheet with a satin insert which helps people turn over in bed. This business is located on the Gold Coast and was started by Dominique Sanday for her father who had Parkinsons.

The next brunch meeting of the South Burnett Parkinson’s Support Group will be held on June 24 at the Wondai Diggers Club.

Guest speaker will be Dr Debbie Tellam, from Kingaroy, who has signed up for the Larapinta Trek in August to help raise funds for Parkinson’s Queensland.

In September, Ron Mitchell, will be taking part in the 10km Bridge to Brisbane event to raise money for Parkinson’s research. Donations can be made online

Doug talked about the art therapy which is being conducted with instructor Morag Muckert at the Murgon Cancer Group, of which he is co-ordinator.  He suggested this type of creative artwork could be therapeutic for the Parkinson’s Support Group.  The completed works can then be displayed for sale at the art gallery in the 55 Million Years Ago complex in Murgon.

It was agreed this idea was a worthwhile one for the group.
