Water users have been invited to have their say as work begins on drafting a new water plan for the Burnett Basin region.
The plan – to be drafted by the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water – will affect water users in the South, Central and North Burnett areas as well as Childers and Bundaberg.
South Region executive director Hamish Butler said public feedback was a crucial part of the routine water planning process.
“The department replaces or renews water plans in Queensland every 10 years or so and our first and absolutely essential step in doing so is community consultation,” Mr Butler said.
“It’s really important we get all relevant views and input because a water plan is in place for a long time and must reflect an understanding of the needs and challenges of a diverse range of water users, cultural values and the environment.”
The Burnett Basin water plan area covers about 38,370 sq km.
“I encourage communities in the Burnett Basin water plan area to take the time to connect with us, get involved and have their voices heard in the development of this new water plan,” Mr Butler said.
