Saints’ men were particularly strong in the rucks, helping South Burnett off to a good start for the season

The South Burnett Saints senior teams began their 2024 campaign in the Darling Downs AFL competition on a winning note, despite trying conditions caused by the weather.

The Saints men’s, women’s and Under 14s team took on the South Toowoomba Bombers at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy on Saturday, as the rain bucketed down.

South Burnett Saints men 10.8-68 defeated the Bombers 7.9-51 in a close tussle.

Goals were kicked by Jack Mines (3), Kelly Salmon (2), Bennett Sharpe, Hunter Brown, Joshua Freeman, Keegan Wright and Mitchell Bailey.

Saints nominated their best players as Mines, Wright, Ben Pressnell, Hunter Brown, Fletcher Brown and Kelly Salmon.

Saints women 6.10-46 defeated the Bombers 3.1-19.

Goals were kicked by Kayla Smith (2), Alexandria Alifrangis, Ellie-Mae Dodt, Melissa Haigh and newcomer Nicole Gunston.

Best players were Alifrangis, Gunston, Haigh, Teresa Foster, Kayley Collins and Kayla Catterall.

In the Under 14s, South Burnett 2.0-12 were defeated by a full-strength Bombers side, 17.11-72.

Best players were Evan Freeman, Aalyah Salmon, Ezra Salmon, Hayden McCrea, Travis McBride and Alana McBride.

All three sides will hit the road next Saturday to take on the Toowoomba Tigers at Rockville Park in Toowoomba.
