Bookings have opened for the South Burnett Musical Comedy Society’s production of Chess The Musical.
The show will be staged in semi-concert style at Kingaroy Town Hall between May 17 and May 26 over four evening and two matinee performances.
“While we have minimal sets and props, we do have choreographed movement and audio visual projections which really add to the energy of the show,” director Julee-anne Bell said.
“The focus is on the fantastic music written by the ABBA boys (Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus) with lyrics by Broadway legend Tim Rice.
“The powerful lead vocals are backed up by a talented chorus, and it already gives me goosebumps.”
The musical is about love, power and – of course – strategy.
The story revolves around a politically driven, Cold War-era chess tournament between two grandmasters, one American and the other Soviet, and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other.
Songs like ‘One Night in Bangkok’ and ‘I Know Him So Well’ will be familiar to many.
Chess features Nick Backstrom as Frederick Trumper, Julee-anne Bell as Florence Vassy, and Thomas Bell as Anatoly Sergievsky, who will lead a full cast of twenty-six singers.
The creative team includes Julee-anne Bell as Director with Thomas Bell as Assistant Director and Jessica Welch as Choreographer.
“If you see just one show this year, make it Chess because it really delivers on the Broadway promise of great music, inspired singing and a company that gives everything to entertain their audience,” Julee-anne said.
