A large crowd gathered at St Kevin’s Catholic Church in Kilkivan recently to attend the final Mass to be held in the building.
The Mass was celebrated by Dr Adrian Farrelly, parish priest at St Patrick’s, Gympie.
Former Kilkivan resident Bernadette Baxter delivered the welcome message to the large congregation.
She reminded the crowd that “Kilkivan” was a Celtic word meaning “the Church of Kevin”.
Another former resident, Joahn Rohan, played the organ, and several past parishioners participated in the service.
In the spirit of ecumenism, many Kilkivan residents who are not Catholics also attended the historic final Mass.
The congregation was then invited to enjoy refreshments at the CWA Rooms.
The future of the building is yet to be announced.
St Matthew’s Anglican Church in Kilkivan was deconsecrated in November 2013, with Gympie Regional Council acquiring the land.
