Dry weather and an oversupply of cattle are driving local cattle market prices back to levels last seen in 2019 (PhotoAL&L)

A combination of dry weather and an oversupply of cattle is driving values down to levels not experienced since 2019.

At the last combined agents sale in Murgon on August 29, 900 head were put up for auction, but prices were down across the board.

In particular, the market for weaner heifers was very tough with few selling above $1.70/kg.

Cattle for the sale were drawn from Gayndah, Mundubbera, Boondooma, Kingaroy, Yarraman, Nanango, Kilkivan, Gunalda and local areas.

Sale results:

  • Heavy Bulls sold to $2.40/kg and $1670
  • Cows over 500kg sold to $2.09/kg and $1420, averaging $2.04/kg
  • Cows 400-500kg topped at $1.98/kg for $980
  • Cows under 400kg sold to $1.70/kg
  • Export heifers sold to $2.40/kg for $1450
  • 450kg Santa steers from Merlwood sold for $1350 at $3.00/kg
  • 428kg Droughtmaster steers from Johnstown sold for $3.01/kg, returning $1290
  • 380kg Limousin steers from Tingoora sold for $1200 at $3.16/kg
  • Santa steers ex Wooroonden sold for $1170 at $3.13/kg
  • 290kg Speckled Park steers from Cushnie sold for $812 at $2.80/kg
  • 300kg Charbray steers from Goomeri sold for $823 at $2.73/kg
  • Santa cross weaner steers from Murgon sold to $2.85/kg for $680
  • Three pens of Santa weaner steers from Gayndah sold to $2.81/kg, topping at $730
  • Santa heifers from Wooroolin sold to $2.40/kg and $1190
  • 390kg Droughtmaster heifers sold for $2.45/kg and $950
  • 300kg Limousin heifers ex Tingoora sold for $830 at $2.70/kg

The next Murgon sale will be held on Tuesday, September 12, from 8:00am.
