South Burnett Regional Council plans to allocate $90,000 for safety upgrades to the McCauley Weir Road at Nanango, which could lead to the eventual re-opening of the facility to the public.

The road to the weir is currently gated and padlocked.

At its infrastructure standing committee meeting in June, councillors voted 5-1 to re-open McCauley Weir Road on a limited basis.

The trial, which follows a safety audit of the road, would include controls and protocols to be implemented as needed by the Chief Executive Officer.

Councillors also voted to budget $90,000 for the safety upgrades at the 2023-24 first quarter review to be allocated from capital program savings achieved in the 2022-23.

Mayor Brett Otto voted against the motion.

  1. I trust that Council considered the impacts on already vulnerable platypus that inhabit the weir waters.

  2. Yes, I can confirm the above. A very thorough survey was taken and it was determined none of the local Platypus (Platypi?) use the road.
