Toowoomba Regional Council has adopted a number of recommendations from an external review into its rating categories.
Cr Geoff McDonald said new categories being introduced from July 1 will ensure that numerous land uses, including large retail, resources and energy, high-intensity rural, non-strata flats and lifestyle villages were categorised in a manner that better reflected the impact that have on Council’s network.
The changes will be staged over several financial years.
Cr McDonald said the rating review was an important element in ensuring Council’s rating framework represented “best practice”.
“This is the first general rating review undertaken by TRC and the recommendations adopted by Council are about enhancing equity and fairness across the very diverse land uses throughout the Toowoomba Region,” Cr McDonald said.
“The external review into Council’s rating categories showed that our current rating framework was generally very sound but that there were opportunities to enhance equity and align some categories with best practice across local government by benchmarking TRC with other similar Queensland councils.”
