A “shave night” held in Kingaroy on Friday night has raised another $3200 for the “Brooksy’s Crew” Relay For Life team.
“Brooksy’s Crew” has been raising funds for cancer charities for the past 12 months in memory of a young Kingaroy resident, Ben Brooks, who died in 2022 of leukaemia and lymphoma.
The “crew” – made up family members and friends – had already raised about $2000 for this year’s Relay For Life online before Friday night.
Their latest big effort led to 10 people losing their hair and/or beards at a function held in the Carrollee Hotel’s beer garden.
It was also a special night for local photographer Nancy Jayde who decided to lose her locks in memory of a friend, Mark Schultz, who died from pancreatic cancer in March last year.
Nancy told southburnett.com.au that Mark had been her hairdresser for years.
When he died, she initially let her hair grow. Then as time went by, she thought that shaving it all off could be a way to support her friend’s memory so she approached “Brooksy’s Crew” with her idea.
Another Kingaroy resident, Dylan Markwell, then offered to have his hair and beard shaved if he raised $1000.
Nancy and Dylan were joined under the razor on Friday night by Miles Huth, Jake and Connor Sullivan, Mitchell Crossley, Zac Hay, Braydon Andersen, Beau Kanay and Cooper Rabbit.
