Toowoomba Regional Council is about to start rolling out 22,000 smart water meters.
The cost of the project – which includes their installation, operation and maintenance – has been estimated at $27.65 million over seven years.
However, the majority of meter installations will occur during the next three years, beginning in March.
“The digital reading of these smart water meters will provide residents with analytics that will alert them and our team to any significant spikes in usage,” Cr Rebecca Vonhoff said.
“With this data, we’ll be able to identify prospective leaks which will help us save valuable water.
“From the initial trial of almost 2000 smart meters, it was identified there was about 12 per cent water loss in the network.
“These new smart meters will help us to improve our system so we can reduce this loss.”
Cr Vonhoff said residents would be able to download an app to monitor their usage.

I do not consent to any kind of “smart” anything. No.
I believe that keeping track of water leaks is a pretty “smart” thing to do. Do you remember a few years ago when Toowoomba nearly ran out of water? It may be hard for some people to comprehend after three years of La Niña events, but Australia suffers regular DROUGHTS.
Toowoomba Council is investing an enormous amount of money in this technology which in the end they reckon will save costs. Water meter readers won’t have to be contracted, and they won’t have to dodge dangerous dogs.
More importantly, these meters will have the potential to save precious water, which the trial has already proven.
I don’t think Klaus Schwab or the World Economic Forum are interested in Toowoomba residents’ water usage.
