St Matthews Anglican Church in Kilkivan was deconsecrated in 2013

February 23, 2023

Gympie Regional Council is exploring options to relocate the historic St Matthews Anglican Church building in Bligh Street, Kilkivan.

The church was built in 1888 but was deconsecrated in November 2013 and Council acquired the land.

Since then, local residents have been campaigning to have the building preserved.

At Wednesday’s meeting, councillors voted unanimously to authorise Council officers to investigate options for the removal (subject to formal Budget approval) of the church building if an appropriate location for community use could be identified.

The block of land that it sits on would then be sold.

Councillors also voted to sell dozens of other blocks surplus to requirements, including lots in Tansey, Woolooga and Cinnabar.
