Did you see the dragon on BP Dam recently? If so, you weren’t imagining it!
A group of enthusiastic paddlers launched a Dragon Boat on Bjelke-Petersen Dam on February 11 to try out a new sport for the area.
Dragon Boat racing has a history reaching back more than 2000 years to inter-village competitions in China.
But more recently, it has become a popular recreational activity in Australia, with teams of 20 getting together regularly for “fun, fitness and friendship” (as Dragon Boat Queensland, describes it).
There are also opportunities to take part in local, State and national competitions.
The Gold Coast-based KIN Dragon club donated a vessel to the BP group, who have tentatively called themselves the “Barambah Dragons”.
Spokesperson Ros Heit said the KIN Dragon club had also donated paddles and lifejackets to help the fledgling South Burnett club get off the ground.
The group plans to hold its next dam outing on March 11 with a crew coming over from Cooloola to join in.
