Some Kingaroy households and businesses may soon get the opportunity to choose faster broadband thanks to a rollout by NBN of more fibre to the premises connections.
On Monday, NBN and the Federal Government released a list of suburbs and towns where more locations will be eligible to order a “wholesale speed Tier 1” connection.
Eligible locations are listed in all States and Territories but in the South Burnett, only Kingaroy gets a mention.
The upgrade to a faster plan must be ordered via a participating internet provider.
South Burnett Mayor Brett Otto welcomed the announcement but expressed disappointment that other South Burnett towns had missed out.
“This is desperately needed to support our local businesses and our increasing population in Kingaroy. People living in Kingaroy deserve the same services afforded to their city cousins,” Mayor Otto said.
“We are experiencing population and business growth in all of (our) towns.
“If the government wants people to live and work in regional centres then they need to step up and invest in services.
“Why should people in small towns be disadvantaged simply because of their location?
“These centres do much of the heavy lifting in the Australian economy. It’s only fair that governments support our growing rural communities.
“I will be writing to our local Federal members of Parliament in coming days to make this point and asking them to raise the issue in Canberra.”

Maybe NBN should do something about the congested local NBN fixed wireless towers first as many premises, including my own, struggle to get 25mbps download even during off-peak hours. Whereas most fixed line NBN premises have no problems getting 100mbps, even during peak hours.
Imagine if the LNP had followed the idea of doing it right the first time.
After conversing with one of the then-local contractors, he was VERY clear about the bottlenecks of the FTTN roll out…
Mayor Otto might want to address the LNP failing regional folk yet again – despite the generational and astounding loyalties given to the Coalition – as part of his discussions with the Federal Nationals Leader and MP for Maranoa.
Too easy to just pull the “Labor, Labor, Labor” sleight of political blamings.
Or is Mr Otto maintaining that ol’ LNP campaigning status quo, perhaps, noting VERY similar blue/yellow billboards from his initial campaign to now around the region.
