January 22, 2023

South Burnett Relay For Life chair Rowena Dionysius is the South Burnett’s 2023 Citizen Of The Year!

Rowena was presented with her award by South Burnett Mayor Brett Otto during a ceremony hosted by the South Burnett Regional Council at Nanango Showgrounds on Sunday afternoon.

She has been chair of the South Burnett Relay For Life committee for 11 years.

During that time the committee has raised more than $1.7 million for Cancer Council Queensland.

The award for 2023 Young Citizen Of The Year was presented by Australia Day Ambassador Jerry Coleby-Williams to outstanding Nanango State High School student Sienna Spencer, the 2021 Youth Member Of Parliament for Nanango and a member of the 2022 South Burnett Youth Council.

A new award presented for 2023 was the South Burnett Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Service.

Mayor Otto said this award recognised and acknowledged a member of our community who had gone above and beyond the call of duty in their field of employment, profession or business to serve the people of the region.

He said he had chosen Dr Graham McAllister on the basis he had served the South Burnett region over an extended period, at all times putting “people before profit”.

The award presentations were held at Nanango Showgrounds as part of the town’s 175th Anniversary celebrations.

Guest speakers were Australia Day Ambassadors Daniel Clarke and Jerry Coleby-Williams.

Daniel, a former Queensland Young Australian of the Year, spoke about his work saving endangered orangutans in the wild in Borneo and Sumatra.

He is an advocate for people with disability and urged the community and organisations to foster inclusiveness.

Jerry, who is well-known through his gardening shows on ABC Radio and ABC-TV, spoke about his passion for gardening and shared how he had found a type of lettuce – now extinct in the UK – growing in Australia, a descendant of plants probably first brought to Australia in 1788 and nurtured by home gardeners across the generations.

Seeds carefully collected in Australia have now been returned to the United Kingdom.

Mayor Brett Otto congratulated Nanango for reaching its 175th anniversary, an achievement that only three other towns in Queensland have accomplished.

He said Australia Day was an opportunity to recognise and honour the achievements of outstanding individuals in the local community.

“It is a chance to celebrate the human qualities, traits of humility, service and selfless generosity that characterise so many brave Australians,” Mayor Otto said.

“Today we have come together to share in the pleasure of acknowledging our own great Australians in our own local community.”
