Cats Claw Creeper is one of the invasive weeds that could be targeted by new landowner-led initiatives

South Burnett Regional Council will be the lead agency in a new co-ordinated program across the Burnett and Gympie regions targeting feral pests and invasive weeds.

The “Building an Invasive Species Management Alliance Project” aims to foster a collaborative landowner-led response at a local, as well as a “whole of landscape”, level.

It plans to use what has worked from existing wild dog control syndicates in the South Burnett and other proven pest initiatives to develop, promote and encourage the establishment of landowner-led group syndicates to tackle both weeds and feral animals.

A series of workshops will be held across the Burnett and Gympie regions to encourage interested landowners to join forces to manage feral animals and weeds collectively.

Seed funding – as well as mentoring from community champions in existing syndicates – will be provided to landowners who wish to start their own groups.

A project co-ordinator will manage the project, run the workshops and support developing groups under the oversight of a steering committee.

The project is being funded by the State and Federal governments as part of the Queensland Feral Pest Initiative.
