Artist Niketa Law’s third exhibition at the Kingaroy Art Gallery highlights the way her art has been evolving over the years.
Niketa’s latest exhibition, “Bloom”, was officially opened by her father, Cherbourg Elder Uncle Eric Law AM, on Saturday morning and will be on display at the gallery all this month.
Uncle Eric said he was very proud of his daughter and the stories she was telling through her artworks.
“Indigenous culture is all about telling stories, and each of these paintings tells a story,” he said.
The popularity of Niketa’s works is demonstrated by the number of “red dots” which were adorning her works before the official opening was over.
Niketa said she was very proud to be showing her artworks on the lands of the Wakka Wakka people.
She said she believed her art had evolved since her first exhibition in Kingaroy and was now more mature and pushing boundaries.
“I am a self-taught traditional contemporary Aboriginal artist,” she said.
“I am not only influenced but guided by the past and the present. I pay homage to my ancestors with every piece I do.
“Creating a piece is a journey for me from start to finish.”
My wife Marion and I visited the Gallery this week. We were unable to attend the opening. Such a beautiful presentation of Indigenous art. Niketa’s art is classic contemporary work of Indigenous stories accumulated throughout her life. We both commend it as exceptional. Practically every piece now carries the ‘red dot’ meaning it has been sold. We trust she keeps progressing with her art and culture. Congratulations Niketa.
