A Youth Mental Health First Aid course for parents and carers will be offered by Darling Downs Health at the Murgon-Cherbourg Youth Hub from next month.
The course is an opportunity for parents and carers of young people to learn how to provide initial support to adolescents who may be developing a mental health problem or suffering a mental health crisis.
The course is free and participants will receive a manual and certificate upon completion.
It will run over four sessions, from 10:00am to 1:00pm, on July 20, July 27, August 3 and August 10.
The course will be delivered by senior psychologist Anita Smith.
Mental health problems include depression, anxiety, eating disorders or substance abuse.
Mental health crises include suicidal thoughts and behaviours, self-injury, panic attacks, aggressive behaviours and severe psychotic states.
Participants will learn about adolescent development and the signs and symptoms of mental health problems.
Registrations can be made at the Murgon-Cherbourg Youth Hub in Gore Street (next door to Murgon State High School) before July 8, by email or phone Youth Hub manager Gaye O’Sullivan on (07) 4172-9729.
