Broncos rookie Selwyn Cobbo earned praise after his strong performance for the Indigenous All Stars against the Maori team on Saturday night in Sydney.
Despite starting on the bench, the former Cherbourg Hornets junior racked up 78 metres in runs and made nine tackles – several at crucial moments in the game – and four tackle breaks.
One commentator described Cobbo’s performance as “brilliant”, saying he had used his elusiveness effectively.
Cobbo gave away a penalty early in the second half when he was adjudged to have tackled Maori winger Reimis Smith while still in the air, but there were just centimetres in it.
The Indigenous team put the first points on the board in the sometimes fiery clash played in the rain at Parramatta.
But the Maori side quickly racked up a string of unanswered tries.
With less than minute left on the clock, the Maori withstood a strong Indigenous challenge close to their line which could have levelled the scores.
The final score was Maori 16, Indigenous 10
Maori try scorers were Kodi Nikorima, Esan Marsters and Joseph Tapine. Patrick Herbert and Kodi Nikorima each kicked a conversion.
Indigenous try scorers were Jesse Ramien and Tyrell Sloan. Braydon Trindall kicked a penalty goal.
