South Burnett Regional Council will seek a 60 per cent subsidy from the State Government for the estimated $250,000 cost of installing a weighbridge and gatehouse at Nanango’s Waste Facility.
The weighbridge has to be built to comply with the State Government’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Act, introduced in 2011 with the aim of minimising the impact of waste disposal.
The weighbridge originally had to be installed by 2021.
However, Council was given a three-year extension by the Department of Environment and Science after agreeing to reduce the volume of waste going into Nanango’s landfill from a maximum 10,000 to 5000 tonnes per year.
That extension will expire on July 1, 2024.
At present Kingaroy’s Lucks Road waste facility is the only landfill in the region with a weighbridge.
The weighbridge is used to help calculate charges for commercial, industrial, construction, demolition waste and asbestos disposal.
At Wednesday’s Communities Standing Committee meeting, Councillors were told other weighbridges were also likely to be required for Wondai and Murgon’s waste facilities.
Cr Danita Potter asked what the expected lifespan of both these landfills was.
She said if was only a few years, it would be a waste of ratepayers’ money to put in weighbridges at one or both these sites.
Officers said they did not have that information to hand, but would report back at a future meeting.
Council will seek State Government support for the new weighbridge at Nanango under the 2022-24 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.
