Santa Claus turned up at the Kingaroy Speedway on Saturday night, but unfortunately for organisers many regular speedway fans did not.

Crowd numbers were noticeably down on the club’s regular annual Christmas Cup meeting.

Organisers blamed the Health Directions which came into force a day before the event for the slump in attendees.

There was confusing information from Queensland Health ahead of Saturday about whether spectators had to be double-vaxxed or not.

Initially, it was believed the open-air track could be classed as a sports stadium, so with less than 5000 people present, anyone could attend.

But at the last minute the club was advised it would be treated as a showground, so only double-vaxxed spectators and participants would be legally allowed in.

Spectators who did attend enjoyed some good racing with local drivers right in the action.

Max Clarke dominated the final of the Christmas Cup for Modified Sedans, ahead of Alex Sweeney, Kent Shelford and Pacey Clegg.
