The cost of installing CCTV cameras and security lighting along the South Burnett Rail Trail between Youngman Street and Meiers Road will be examined by the South Burnett Regional Council next month.
At Wednesday’s General Meeting, Councillors were told residents near Meiers Road were concerned the area was becoming a haunt for late-night drug users.
Residents believed better lighting and security cameras would deter this behaviour.
They also believed security cameras would make it easier for police to prosecute offenders.
Cr Kirstie Schumacher told the meeting she believed residents in the area were promised security measures would be installed to help safeguard their properties when the trail was being built in 2016.
However, this promise appeared to have been forgotten until recent incidents in the Meiers Road area reignited residents’ concerns.
Councillors noted there was no money set aside in this year’s works budget for this type of project at the moment.
However, they thought some might be found at the quarterly Budget review in September.
A motion to re-examine the issue next month once options and costings have been obtained was carried unanimously.
