The organising committee of the annual Relay For Life Dinner With The Captains has accepted the inevitable … the 2021 dinner has been cancelled.

The booked out dinner was postponed on July 31 – the morning it was to be held – due to the announcement of a snap south-east Queensland COVID-19 lockdown.

It would have featured guest speakers Allan “Alfie” Langer AM, Natalie Cook OAM and Kelvin Kerkow OAM.

All the food preparations were complete which created a headache for organisers but a bonus for Kingaroy citizens who were invited to come down to the Town Hall to buy some special “takeaway” meals.

At the time, South Burnett Relay For Life patron Carl Rackemann told southburnett.com.au he hoped the dinner could be rescheduled for later this year, but everything was very uncertain.

However, Carl said on Wednesday the committee had “very regrettably” made the decision to cancel this year’s dinner altogether.

“We don’t feel we can confidently set a date later in the year without the risk of a similar disappointing outcome,” he said.

“We are very grateful to all the supporters and sponsors, particularly major sponsors Telstra Store Kingaroy, and the night was promising to be another amazing event.

“Hopefully we can stage Dinner With The Captains successfully next year.

“In an attempt to raise much-needed funds for the ongoing fight against cancer, we plan to again have a live “Auction With The Captains” later this year on CROW-FM.”

This is the second year in a row the pandemic has scuttled plans for the dinner, which is always a highlight on the South Burnett’s annual calendar.

Carl said he wanted to thank the sponsors, supporters and media partners who had backed the 2021 dinner:
