A young boy has been flown to hospital with critical burns after an incident on Thursday night.

The RACQ LifeFlight helicopter was called to the South Burnett just after 7:00pm.

A LifeFlight spokesperson said it was believed the child had been attempting to light a fire, using petrol, when flames erupted, burning him from the waist up.

He reportedly suffered critical burns to about 60 per cent of his body.

Ambulance paramedics initially treated the boy at the scene before taking him to Goomeri Showgrounds to rendezvous with the LifeFlight helicopter.

He was then flown to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
