A full-time compliance officer has been hired in a bid to stamp out illegal dumping in the South Burnett, Cherbourg and North Burnett council areas.

The three councils have received a $158,500 State Government grant to hire the officer for 12 months under the Local Government Illegal Dumping Partnerships Program.

The compliance officer will investigate illegal dumping, raise awareness within the community and develop long-term strategies to reduce waste.

Illegal dumping can attract large fines.

Individual offenders can face fines of more than $2000 and corporations, fines of more than $10,000.

Cr Roz Frohloff said the program would empower the South Burnett community to take action to reduce the burden illegal dumping has environmentally, economically and socially on the region.

The SBRC offers free household and green waste disposal at 17 transfer stations across the region.
