A 19-year-old woman has been sentenced to three months’ jail – suspended for a year – after the accidental death of a man in Wondai last year.
Gemma Vogel, from Wondai, pleaded guilty in Murgon Magistrates Court on Tuesday to driving without due care and attention causing death.
The court was told Stephen Kemp, 61, suffered fatal head injuries when he fell from a moving vehicle in Haly Street, Wondai, on the evening of May 2, 2020.
Emergency services were called about 7:15pm.
Critical care paramedics treated Mr Kemp at the scene before transporting him to Wondai Showgrounds where he was transferred to a waiting medevac helicopter.
Mr Kemp died in hospital on May 4.
The court was told Vogel had offered Mr Kemp a lift after spotting him walking down the street.
Vogel initially believed Mr Kemp had got inside the vehicle but he was in fact standing on a side rail.
When she stopped a short distance later, he fell off, striking his head on the roadway.
Magistrate Andrew Sinclair also suspended Vogel from holding a driving licence for nine months.
A conviction was recorded.
