The sister of murdered Brisbane woman Allison-Bayden Clay will be the special guest at the South Burnett Australia Day awards presentation on Sunday (January 24).
South Burnett Mayor Brett Otto said Vanessa A. Fowler was this year’s South Burnett Australia Day Ambassador.
Australia Day Ambassadors volunteer their time and share their stories at community events around the nation.
Vanessa is a director and chair of the not-for-profit Allison Baden-Clay Foundation, which aims to educate the community about family and domestic violence.
Allison’s death at the hands of her husband in 2012 led to the formation of the Foundation, which also runs the Strive To Be Kind annual campaign to encourage people to practice kindness in their daily lives.
Vanessa is a primary school teacher as well as a wife, mother of two boys and aunt to Allison’s three daughters.
NB. The awards ceremony, which is being held at Wondai Town Hall, is by invitation only this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, live entertainment and a sausage sizzle will be provided for the public at the conclusion of the ceremony from 2:00-3:00pm outside the hall.
