Wondai resident Mark Stapleton – a nurse at Murgon Hospital – is getting ready to challenge Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington at the upcoming State poll.

Mark is the Australian Labor Party candidate for the State seat of Nanango, currently held by Mrs Frecklington.

The Queensland State Election is due to be held on October 31.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk made the announcement of the party selection for the seat on Monday.

“We need local champions like Mark to help deliver our COVID-19 economic recovery plan in their area, to support businesses, restore local jobs, and encourage more industry to future-proof our great state,” Premier Palaszczuk said.

Mr Stapleton admitted he had a big task ahead of him to unseat Mrs Frecklington but said he was looking forward to the challenge.

However, he was very confident of a Labor victory in the State overall.

Mr Stapleton was out and about chatting to residents about local issues at the Wondai markets on Saturday.

Mrs Frecklington secured 48 per cent of the Nanango Electorate vote at the 2017 poll, ahead of One Nation’s 27.44 per cent, Labor’s 19.27 per cent and 5.29 per cent for the Greens.
