The South Burnett was represented at a regional workshop in Maryborough earlier this month which discussed priority projects across the region.

The workshop was organised by the Wide Bay Burnett Regional Organisation of Councils (WBBROC), the umbrella organisation for the six councils in the Wide Bay region: South Burnett, Cherbourg, North Burnett, Gympie, Fraser Coast and Bundaberg.

The South Burnett Regional Council was represented by Mayor Brett Otto, Deputy Mayor Gavin Jones and Council CEO Mark Pitt.

A Council spokesperson said a focus of the event was to discuss COVID-19 recovery projects which could kickstart an economic stimulus for the region.

The spokesperson said the workshop only covered preliminary discussions, however priorities discussed included:

  • Water discounts to help promote economic growth
  • Roads
  • Attracting manufacturing businesses to the region
  • Promoting domestic tourism into and throughout the region
  • School-based vocational training

“The WBBROC workshop gives participating Councils an opportunity to demonstrate to the community that we are continuing to lobby the State Government on the need to fund further COVID-19 recovery projects,” Mayor Otto said.

“These workshops are critical, enabling councils to work together to support communities in bouncing back from economic damage caused by the pandemic.”
