Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council has introduced some changes to the current travel restrictions in the Cherbourg community.
Mayor Elvie Sandow announced the changes on Friday.
“There is still no COVID-19 in our community, and there hasn’t been a case in Gympie or the South Burnett for a number of weeks,” the Mayor said.
“There are still hot spots in parts of Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast but in general Queensland has seen a decline in the number of cases reported.”
To reflect this, the State Government announced some relaxation of COVID-19 movement restrictions, including allowing movement to shop for food and other essential goods and services such as clothing and blankets.
The Mayor said she and CEO Chatur Zala had met with members of the Gympie District Disaster Management Group and biosecurity doctors from Toowoomba last Wednesday.
Effective from midnight, May 1:
- Travel will be allowed to Kingaroy for a four-hour period between 8:00am and 8:00pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (starting May 2, 2020);
- Four people will be allowed in a vehicle (children included) but at least three of the occupants must live in the same house.
The Mayor said the new arrangements were in line with bio-security arrangements in discrete communities, and they would be reviewed on a daily basis.
“It is always important to remember (to) maintain social distancing and wash your hands often,” Mayor Sandow said.
“We don’t want to bring the virus into our community.
“Remember, these restrictions are to limit any possible exposure to the virus. In this case, we have to stay apart to work together
“We are doing this for all of the community, especially the Elders and the very young people.
“If we stick to the rules, Cherbourg can continue to be an example to the rest of Queensland.”
