A birthday party with a difference was held at Kingaroy RSL Club on Thursday evening … the participants were all former classmates from Kingaroy State High School.

The “70th Birthday” celebration was organised by Lloyd Stumer, from Brisbane, as all were turning 70 or thereabouts this year.

The former students attended Kingaroy State School through to 1967, although many started their education in 1956 in various local State Schools or St Mary’s Catholic School which in those days did not offer senior years.

About 55 people, including their partners, packed into the RSL’s White Room to pore over old photos, enjoy a few drinks and a meal, and share memories.

And they travelled from all over to be there … from NSW, Mackay, Gladstone and Brisbane as well as from across the South Burnett.

Kathy (Pethtel) Leimgruber, Gloucester, NSW; Faith (Pethtel) Sommerfeld and husband Bryan, Hervey Bay; and Robyn (Webster) Snell, Brisbane
Beth (Sheppard) Stephenson, Kingaroy; Robyn (Lewis) Piper, South Kolan; and Sherenne (Greenslade) Powell, Dalby
Les Trace, from Coolabunia, and Ivan Ritchings, Mackay
Col and Yvie Rogerson, Kingaroy; Vivian Fiedler, Gladstone; and John Knopke, Kingaroy

  1. We at the party were very privileged to celebrate once again our friendships formed during our journeys through Kingaroy and time. We certainly also appreciate our friendships formed with everyone else who were unable to come and the many friends from all years in the district.

Special thanks are given to the girls (especially the cake cutters Michelle, Lorraine and Jacqui plus Sherenne and Debbi) who ensured everything was well organised, and to everyone for providing the ambience of the party. The 3 fellows in the photo above (Allan, Peter and myself) are there only to provide gender equality in the photo, and to ensure the girls cut the cake properly.
