Police want to remind businesses to be aware of fake banknotes which have been spotted recently in Toowoomba.

The $50 notes feature Chinese characters printed near the clear window.

Similar fake notes have been found in the past circulating in Tasmania, Western Australia and Victoria.

Police say the notes are believed to have been printed for use in “training” visitors to Australia, although similar notes have also been imported in the past as “joss” money for use during traditional Lunar New Year celebrations.

A police spokesperson said if people saw any banknotes with any foreign characters on them, they should be aware they have no monetary value in Australia and should not be accepted as currency.

Anyone with information about the fake currency should contact Policelink on 13-14-44 or Crime Stoppers in 1800-333-000.
