Kingaroy State High School’s ag team had a strong presence at the annual Angus Youth Roundup over the school holidays, bringing several ribbons back home.

Four students – Abby Nowland, Bonnie Brunner, Byron Brunner and Amity Campbell – accompanied by a teacher and the school’s show heifers attended the camp which was held in Toowoomba from January 16-19.

Abby returned with the Matthew George Citizenship Award while Byron was Intermediate champion in the Mort & Co Meat Judging competition.

The Citizenship Award takes the form of a $500 bursary towards educational expenses and is presented in memory of a young Victorian cattleman killed in a car crash in 2007.

The Angus Youth Roundup is for young people aged 8-25; novices as well as experienced competitors.

The Toowoomba camp – held in Queensland for the first time in six years – attracted more than 130 participants and 150 cattle from all the States and Territories.

The program included educational sessions and demonstrations, the Barnyard Olympics, meat judging and commercial junior judging, cattle classes and parader classes.

Other South Burnett prize winners included Chloe Plowman, from Kingaroy, who took out the EJ Angus Encouragement Award, Champion Intermediate Parader and Reserve Champion Intermediate meat judging.

Bowenfels Angus was named Best Maintained Stall and was Champion in the Cattle Shop Fitting competition.

Darcy Graham, from Kingaroy, was Champion Peewee Herdsperson and Mikaela Ross,  Booubyjan, was Reserve Champion Senior Parader.

The 2021 roundup will be held in Wodonga, Victoria.
