South Burnett police chaplain Rev Dr David Ferguson was farewelled at a barbecue lunch held at Kingaroy Police Station on Friday.

Dr Ferguson was formally appointed to the role almost 3 1/2 years ago but has been assisting for even longer.

The Uniting Church Minister has also been responsible for local churches at Kingaroy, Wondai, Kumbia and Corndale but is now packing his bags and heading to Perth.

He has been appointed Presbytery Officer – a senior role within the Uniting Church – for an area of Western Australia stretching north to Port Hedland.

Rev John Selwood, who has been working alongside Dr Ferguson, will continue in the role as police chaplain in the South Burnett.

Officer-in-charge of Kingaroy Police, Senior Sergeant David Tierney, said the role of police chaplain was very important.

He said police officers sometimes “ran a mile” from the chaplain, but then when something happened they were glad to have someone to whom they could talk.

The police chaplain also presides over the annual Police Remembrance Day commemorations.
