A 31-year-old man has been flown to hospital in a critical condition after a head-on collision on Kingaroy-Burrandowan Road at Chahpingah on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called at 12:48pm and multiple ambulances responded.

An RACQ LifeFlight helicopter was also despatched and landed in a paddock near the scene.

Paramedics treated the male driver of one of the vehicles for serious head injuries.

He was then transferred to the waiting helicopter for transport to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

The 39-year-old female driver of the other car was assessed by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital.

The crash occurred about one kilometre from the intersection with Ironpot Road.

The Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
