A 26-year-old Kingaroy man charged over a fatal hit-and-run on the New England Highway outside Yarraman on Christmas Day in 2017 walked free from Brisbane District Court on Friday.

Gavan Barry Blunt, who has been in custody since the incident, was sentenced to five years’ jail by Judge David Reid but was granted immediate parole.

Blunt pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle vehicle causing death, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

The court was told the 51-year-old victim of the hit-and-run, Christine Almond, was lying on the road when Blunt struck her in a stolen vehicle.

Police were called to the incident, near the intersection of Tarong-Yarraman Road, about 11:40pm on December 25, 2017.

Blunt also pleaded guilty to unrelated charges of entering a dwelling with intent and assault occasioning bodily harm.
