A 24-year-old woman has been charged with an animal cruelty offence after police were called to house in Goomeri on Saturday.

Senior Constable Lorenzo Marabini said police were were notified a dog was locked under a building.

Police will allege they located a two-year-old dog emaciated and covered in fleas, with only limited food and no access to water.

They were unable to contact the owner.

In conjunction with the RSPCA and Gympie Regional Council, police seized the animal and provided it with the necessities of life.

On Monday, a Goomeri woman was charged with breaching a duty of care for an animal under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.

She will appear in Murgon Magistrates Court on September 17.

“Police would like to remind the community of their duty owed to their animals, who are dependant on their owners,” Snr Const Marabini said.

“As summer approaches, please do not leave animals in cars and make sure they have access to clean drinking water, food and appropriate shelter.”
