South Burnett schools could buy new equipment, undertake building projects or source extra targeted support via a new Federal grant program.

The Local Schools Community Fund (LSCF) offers grants up to $20,000 for projects that benefit children’s learning experience.

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the LSCF would contribute amounts between $1000 and $20,000 towards a variety of school projects and associated costs.

“This is an excellent opportunity for schools to apply for funding for projects like new playground equipment, renovating a classroom or improving sports facilities,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I’d encourage all schools to think about what they could do with a share of the funds that would deliver real benefits and improve the quality of education for their students.”

The fund will open for applications on Thursday (July 25).

LSCF is open to government, independent and Catholic schools.

However, eligibility conditions apply and proposed projects will be assessed by a committee appointed by local Federal MPs.

Worthwhile projects could include small-scale extensions or classroom refurbishments, new computer facilities, mental health and counselling services, playground equipment, library resources, or sports facilities.

The Federal Government announced the $30.2 million LSCF in the 2019 Budget.

Up to $200,000 is available in each Federal electorate.

Applications should be made through SchoolsHUB

They will close on September 30 and projects must be completed by the end of 2020.
