More than a thousand students were presented with their graduation certificates at recent ceremonies at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba.
Among them were South Burnett locals Kyra O’Sullivan (Bachelor of Engineering) – who delivered one of the valedictorian speeches – Kirby Reaves (Bachelor of Science) and Phillip Costello (Bachelor of Laws).
At 64-years-old, former Wondai real estate agent Phillip is one of USQ’s oldest law graduates.
He studied for his degree remotely from his Ballogie cattle property.
Chancellor John Dornbusch said graduation ceremonies were wonderful moments in the life of the University.
“I know that each and every graduating student here has a story to tell about their university journey,” he said.
“Some have relocated from overseas or travelled hundreds of kilometres to study here, leaving behind their homes, their friends, and their family.
“Some have put full-time jobs and careers on hold to take up study. Others have taken on multiple part-time jobs, working long, late hours just to support themselves.
“You have shown commitment, dedication and persistence; and no doubt you’ve experienced setbacks and failures.
“These are the things that will give you the strength and conviction to meet any challenge that is set down before you in the future. These are the things that have made your friends and family so proud of you today.”
