Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott will be visiting Cherbourg on Thursday as part of his role as the Federal Government’s “Indigenous envoy”.
The Federal Liberal Party backbencher was appointed to the position in August by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
At the time, Mr Abbott said school attendance and performance would be his major focus.
The surprise move was criticised by some Indigenous leaders, including Pat Dodson who described it as “insulting”.
Darren Godwell, then-CEO of the Stronger Smarter Institute, described the move as “confusing”.
Since then, Mr Abbott has visited a string of Indigenous communities and schools around the country.
On Thursday, he plans to meet with Cherbourg Mayor Arnold Murray and councillors, before visiting Cherbourg State School.
He will then drop in to visit The Ration Shed Museum.
