Toowoomba Regional Council is calling for community representatives to apply to join its new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee.
TRC Chair of Environment and Community Cr Geoff McDonald said this was an important step for the community.
“At the moment there is no real contact point for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community with Council,” he said.
“The formation of this committee will hopefully help bridge this gap.
“We often talk about the various Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander links we have in our region and this Advisory Committee will help to formalise these connections throughout Council.
“A priority of the new committee will be developing a TRC Reconciliation Action Plan to provide a framework for Council to support the national reconciliation movement.
“The establishment of this important committee will provide guidance on the cultural needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
“We encourage representatives of Toowoomba Region’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to apply for appointment to the Advisory Committee and help enact tangible change in our region.”
The committee will consist of 11 members, including two councillors.
Interested community member applicants must identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and will need to submit a written expression of interest to info@tr.qld.gov.au or by post to Council.
Applications close at 5:00pm on Friday. December 7.
