The State Government’s new container recycling deposit scheme officially began on Thursday so South Burnett residents can now redeem eligible containers for 10c in Kingaroy, Cherbourg and Kilkivan.

The Kingaroy Container Recycling Scheme (CRS) drop-off point will be operated by Return-It in the Lifeline Shop at 189 Kingaroy Street.
The depot will be open from 8:30am to 4:30pm on weekdays, 8:30am to 12:30pm on Saturdays and 8:30am to 4:30pm on Sundays.
In order to use this drop-off point, customers will first need to register for a Containers for Change “scheme account” to be given a Scheme ID, which is able to be completed online.
Inside the Lifeline store, they’ll enter their Scheme ID and the number of containers they’re redeeming into a terminal, which will print out a receipt.
This receipt then needs to be pasted on to a translucent plastic bag – such as a kitchen tidy liner – that containers must be enclosed in.
Refunds will be deposited into their bank account a few days later after the bag has been checked

The Cherbourg CRS drop off point is located near the Cherbourg Recycling Centre on Stan Mickelo Drive, immediately before the town area.
This all-weather depot will operate from 7:00am to 3:30pm Mondays to Thursdays, as well every second Friday.
To use it, people should also register for a Containers For Change scheme ID beforehand so that refunds can be deposited directly to their bank account.

Kilkivan residents will be able to drop off their containers at the post office in Bligh Street from 9:00am to 5:00pm on weekdays.
The Kilkivan depot will provide over-the-counter cash refunds, and there’s no need to create an account beforehand.

The State Government says the CRS has been introduced to reduce litter, improve recycling rates and provide opportunities for charities, community groups and other not-for-profit organisations to raise extra funds by setting up their own container collection points and redeeming the containers themselves.
Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and three litres will be eligible for a refund except for milk containers and wine bottles.
Various charities are also expected to volunteer as drop-off points as part of their fundraising activities.

So we have just got rid of using plastic bags and now we have to use plastic bags again to get a refund for the cans/bottles that we want to recycle – how ridiculous
Agree with the plastic bag issue. It seems though that at the moment it’s the tidiest way to drop off the bottles since you have to take it INSIDE a shop! Hopefully it will eventually evolve into an outdoor-type drop-off area/centre where smells don’t matter so much.
Also, I find the restrictions on things like wine bottles (for example) ridiculous. It doesn’t make any sense. But anyway, glad something is finally starting happen along the lines of recycling in this area!!!
The Cherbourg facility is great and the guys do a very efficient job. We had a full wheelie bin plus a couple of boxes and it was done promptly – no plastic bags in sight. Congratulations to Andrew Beckett and the team.
I too thought it was odd to be using plastic bags to recycle goods in! I rang the council and they informed me that the bags also get recycled. Hopefully that’s accurate!
Can someone please advise me on the closest drop off point to Windera?
The nearest place when you can swap cans for cash is at Cherbourg, however you may like to check at your local school as many are acting as drop-off points to raise money for their P&Cs

Yes, at the moment Cherbourg is the only Container Refund Point in the South Burnett. One is planned to open in Kingaroy soon.
