Toowoomba Regional Council will soon start work on improvements at Yarraman Cemetery as part of program to upgrade the 27 cemeteries that Council looks after.
“Council will soon release a tender for upgrades to the Columbarium Wall at Yarraman Cemetery,” Cr Geoff McDonald said.
Construction will also start soon at Yarraman on an extension to the Lawn Cemetery.
“Our cemeteries are as old as the region and so these timely refurbishments will ensure they remain a dignified place of remembrance and a nice place to visit,” Cr McDonald said.
“With the focus in this year’s Budget on renewal, Council has developed an ongoing program to replace ageing infrastructure at cemeteries throughout our region.”
Cr McDonald said new signs had been installed at five of the smaller regional cemeteries to help visitors find individual graves.
This program would eventually be rolled out to all TRC cemeteries.
“Many of our region’s cemeteries were originally community owned and have, over the years, gradually become Council’s responsibility to maintain,” Cr McDonald said.
