Tyrone Murray scored two tries for the Hornets on Saturday … but victory for Cherbourg was just out of reach …

June 22, 2018

Nanango Stags stamped their dominance on the 2018 senior South Burnett Rugby League last Saturday by downing the Cherbourg Hornets … at Cherbourg.

Defeating the Hornets is a hard task for any team at the best of times, but beating them in front of a home crowd is usually almost impossible.

The game started evenly enough with Nanango drawing first blood through a try to Kieran Douglas, which was quickly answered by Cherbourg’s Alex Speedy.

A few minutes later Speedy put the home team ahead 6-4 by kicking a rare penalty goal.

Both teams then scored ahead of the break, to take the half-time score to Cherbourg 10, Nanango 8.

The Stags came out firing in the second half, putting on five tries to one until the Hornets scored a consolation try with just over a minute on the clock.

The final score was Nanango 36, Cherbourg 20.

Nanango tries were scored by Kieran Douglas (2), Shane Argent (2), Chris Clark, Harley Farrar and Brent Greenslade. Rhyse Simpson kicked four goals.

Cherbourg tries were scored by Tyrone Murray (2), Alex Speedy and Peter Langton. Alex Speedy and Bernard Hopkins kicked one goal apiece.

Peter Langton scores a consolation try for Cherbourg in the dying minutes of the game

In the first game, Kawana was leading Noosa 20-6 at half-time, and then kept them scoreless in the second half to win 34-6.

The second game was between the South Burnett Eagles and Nambour.

South Burnett were ahead 18-6 at the break, and then put on another try in the second half to seal the victory 24-6.

South Burnett tries were scored by Celeste Purcell, Sheryl-Lee Barnes-Parsons, Hayley Grattidge and Keisha Carstairs. Hannah Allcock kicked three goals and Ivana Fuller kicked one.
