Murgon Mustangs overpowered Kingaroy in their A Grade rugby league clash played at Murgon Showgrounds on Saturday.

The home team were ahead 18-14 at half-time after the Mustangs began strongly, scoring back-to-back tries in the first 10 minutes.

A Jye Hopkins try for the Red Ants with 10 minutes left in the half briefly levelled the scores at 14-all before Arthur Saltner scored the second of his three tries on the day to put Murgon back in the lead.

Murgon began the second half in the same style as the first, with a quick try to Lloyd Saltner.

The game then settled down into an arm-wrestle with neither side making headway until Arthur Saltner finally broke away to score his third try with four minutes to go.

With less than one minute left on the clock, Mitchell Crossley scored a consolation try for Kingaroy which was converted by Jye Hopkins after the siren to take the final score to Murgon 28, Kingaroy 20.

Murgon tries were scored by Arthur Saltner (3), Lloyd Saltner (2) and Vincent Watson. Chris Bond and Elwyn Fewquandie each kicked one goal.

Kingaroy tries were scored by Andrew Stewart, Jye Hopkins, Elvis Bell and Mitch Crossley. Jack Hourn and Jye Hopkins each kicked one goal.

After five rounds of the senior competition, the Nanango Stags are in top spot on the ladder with 8 points, followed by Kingaroy and Cherbourg with 6pts and Murgon 4pts. Wondai is yet to record a win.
