The Nanango and District Netball Association has won a prestigious Minister’s Excellence Award for its drive to recruit members from Cherbourg.

On Sunday, Sports Minister Mick de Brenni congratulated past president Sheena Lindholm and members of the Association’s executive for going ‘above and beyond’ to include young women from the town, where there was a lack of organised female sports.

“Sheena and the Association have overcome many challenges to ensure about 50 women and girls from the Cherbourg community are playing regular netball games,” Mr de Brenni said.

“I’d like to thank the Nanango and District Netball Association for your perseverance and helping the Cherbourg community get active.”

The award was announced at the Firebirds v Sunshine Coast lightning game at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

The Netball Association also won the Inclusion category of the 2017 Start Playing Stay Playing awards, which recognises individuals or sporting groups who make outstanding efforts to include female participants who may experience barriers to participation.
